David and Judy Smart were up for a sunset flight in their Cessna 172 when everything came together. The sun dipped in between clouds on the horizon, throwing a soft shadow over Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, in Northeast Oklahoma. David says it’s “perhaps the most beautiful sunset we have ever witnessed together.” Hard to argue with that.

The View: Flying over our area lake located in Northeast Oklahoma (Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees).

The Pilot: David Smart*.

The Photographer: Judy Smart.

The Airplane: 1959 Cessna 172 Skyhawk.

The Mission: Our mission was to photograph and enjoy a brief local flight over Grand Lake together as the sun was setting in the evening sky.

The Memory: The photo Judy captured was perhaps the most beautiful sunset we have ever witnessed together, and certainly from our plane.

* David Smart and his wife Judy live in Northeast Oklahoma along scenic Grand Lake. He is 56 years of age and has been a licensed pilot since 1984. He has been a huge airplane enthusiast since his first flight in 1967 near Wichita, Kansas, in a Cessna 172 at the age of 7. The aircraft was owned by a childhood friend's father. He has flown sparingly over the years, mainly due to expenses, until only recently when he took the plunge and purchased his very first airplane... a vintage 1959 Cessna 172 in December. David and his wife have thoroughly enjoyed every minute they share with their new family addition, Clare Sky.
