This is what flying is all about. Steve Ellis loves to give airplane rides to kids (he’s working on his 3rd guest logbook), and this early morning flight with 12-year old Luke Kallaher was just about perfect. In this week’s Friday Photo, you can enjoy the smile of a kid at home in a J-3 Cub with the windows open.

The View: Luke’s first flight.

The Pilot: Steve Ellis*.

The Airplane: 1940 Piper J3C-65.

The Mission: Giving rides to deserving kids.

The Memory: This Cub was used to train pilots in World War II and later for crop dusting. Now it has a much more important mission: giving kids their first airplane ride. On this flight, the passenger was Luke Kallaher of Lindale, Texas – a straight A student and talented drummer. The early morning was beautiful and the flight from Terrell (KTRL) to Van Zandt County (76F) with the windows open was just perfect.

* Steve Ellis is a private pilot with over 2000 hours, 1700 of those in taildraggers, including the Super Cub, RV-4, J-3 Cub and Pawnee. He grew up and learned to fly in Vero Beach, Florida, and says over 90% of his flying time has been taking people up for their first flights.
